Overview

Thriving Nottingham is a community-driven lifestyle service created for the residents of Nottingham. Owned and managed by Thrive Tribe, the service offers a range of health and wellbeing programs, including support for quitting smoking, weight loss, increased physical activity, and personalised guidance tailored to individual needs.

The goal was to create a compelling website to:

  • Inform residents about available services.
  • Drive engagement and referrals.
  • Represent the service’s mission with a clear and approachable visual identity.

The website needed to balance accessibility, user engagement, and a professional yet friendly design that resonated with Nottingham's diverse audience.

Process

Branding

To establish a unique identity for Thriving Nottingham, I collaborated with Public Health Nottingham and the Thrive Tribe marketing team. Through extensive research and brainstorming sessions, we finalised the service name, logo, and overall visual identity. The branding was centered around themes of growth, positivity, and local community spirit. I developed a vibrant and approachable colour palette, combined with clean typography and custom iconography, ensuring the brand felt welcoming and easily recognisable. The visual identity was designed to appeal to a broad demographic, fostering trust and encouraging community engagement.

Website Design & Build

The website design process began with a kick-off workshop where we gathered requirements and discussed key objectives. As a team, we mapped out the end-to-end user journey and structured an intuitive site map to streamline navigation. I created wireframes and interactive prototypes to map out a clear and intuitive navigation flow. Key sections such as program details, referral options, and success stories were prioritised for easy access, ensuring a user-centric experience.

Visual Design

I focused on crafting a visually engaging layout that aligned with the established brand identity while adhering to accessibility standards, such as high contrast, readable fonts, and descriptive alt text for images. The design emphasised simplicity and clarity to accommodate users with varying levels of digital literacy.

Content Strategy

Collaborating closely with the content writer, I ensured the messaging was concise, relatable, and action-oriented. The content was tailored to promote engagement, with clear calls-to-action like “Get Started” and imagery targeted towards our target audience. Special attention was given to localising the content to resonate with Nottingham residents, fostering a sense of community connection.

Development & Accessibility

Once the design was finalised, I worked closely with developers to build a responsive, mobile-friendly website optimised for speed and usability. The website was rigorously tested to ensure seamless performance across all devices and browsers, making it accessible for users of varying technological proficiency. The site was designed to meet WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards, incorporating elements such as keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and inclusive design practices to cater to diverse user needs.

Outcome

The launch of Thriving Nottingham resulted in significant engagement and positive feedback from both users and stakeholders. Key achievements include:

  • Over 800 referrals within the first three months of launch, surpassing initial targets.
  • An average of 1,200 monthly visitors, demonstrating strong community interest and engagement.
  • Positive feedback from local health organisations and residents, emphasising the website's ease of use and accessibility.

Next Steps

To further improve the website's impact and effectiveness, the following next steps have been identified:

  • Usability Testing: Conducting user testing sessions with neurodiverse individuals to uncover potential accessibility improvements and enhance inclusivity.
  • Continuous Iteration: Refining the design and content based on user surveys and analytics data to ensure ongoing optimisation.
  • Feature Enhancements: Introducing self-assessment tools and video testimonials, to further engage and empower users.

The success of Thriving Nottingham highlights the importance of collaborative design, user research, and accessibility-driven development in creating digital platforms that empower communities to lead healthier lives.
